England is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the World. We rank a tragic 228th out of 240 countries on the Biodiversity Intactness Index.
We are seeing alarming declines and 13% of species are threatened with extinction.
Yet only an estimated 15% of councils have declared a nature emergency. Only 15% recognise this dire situation and plan to do something about it. It's not enough.
Under the 2021 Environment Act, local authorities must soon produce new strategies for local nature recovery. It's essential these plans are bold and ambitious if they're to create the change we need for nature and people.
The Woodland Trust's recent report shows the important role trees can and must play in nature's recovery. Trees provide homes and essential food for wildlife. They reduce the risk of flooding, improve air and water quality, boost mental and physical wellbeing and so much more.
Councils can take effective action now by putting trees back into the places we live so people and nature alike can thrive on the benefits they bring.
