Ask your MS candidates to invest in trees

Trees aren’t a luxury. They’re one of Wales’s smartest investments.

They cool our streets during heatwaves, clean the air our children breathe, reduce flooding and support our mental and physical health. But access to these benefits is deeply unequal and many of Wales's most important woods and trees remain unrecognised or under threat. This needs to change.

The next Senedd must value trees as irreplaceable living heritage. It must choose the smartest path, recognising trees and woods as essential national assets that deliver health, wellbeing, and resilience for everyone in Wales.

  • Doubling tree cover could cut the number of heat-related deaths in European cities during summer months by nearly 40%.

  • 77% of GPs believe more trees could reduce the financial burden on the NHS.

  • Rainwater can infiltrate soil up to 67 faster with trees than in grazed pasture, reducing runoff by an average of 78%. This reduces farm soil erosion and all flood impacts.

  • In our streets, trees intercept heavy rains and slow the flow of water into drainage systems by up to 80% in comparison with tarmac. Trees significantly reduce the human impact of floods and their rising costs.

Join us in calling on Members of the Senedd and Welsh Government to make four key commitments:

  1.  Make tree equity a national mission, so everyone can benefit from healthier, greener neighbourhoods.

  2.  Secure a resilient future for farming, rural communities, and Welsh culture, by recognising and implementing the essential services trees provide.

  3. Protect and restore our living heritage, by investing in our most important trees, our ancient woods and our rainforests as irreplaceable national assets.

  4. Grow Wales with trees, supporting skilled green jobs, strong ethical supply chains, and long-term prosperity.

How will the new voting system work at the next Senedd Election?

The new system is called a ‘closed proportional list system.’ This means the number of seats a party or independent candidate wins will more closely reflect the percentage of votes they get.

  • Wales will be divided into 16 areas for the 2026 election, called constituencies.

  • Each constituency will have six seats in the Senedd, which means six Members will be elected in each area.

  • Political parties will list up to eight candidates for each constituency. Independent candidates can also stand for election.

  • You will vote for one party or one independent candidate.

  • The seats are allocated based on the share of votes each party or independent candidate gets.

  • For example, if a party wins three seats, the top three people on their list will be elected to those seats.

  • 96 Members of the Senedd will be elected in total.
