'The Time is Now' to fight for climate, nature and people.

What do we want?

Action on climate change, and strong laws that will create a healthier environment for nature and for people.

When do we want it?

An exciting public event is happening this summer – and we want you to join us there.

In Westminster on Wednesday 26 June a mass lobby is being arranged by our friends in The Climate Coalition and GreenerUK, two major coalitions working jointly on this crucial issue. The aim is to give people a chance to meet MPs face-to-face, and speak up for climate, nature and people.

Take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to act on climate change and for our environment. We all need to work together to get our politicians to go further -  and faster -  to protect nature and our planet.

The Time is Now will send a clear message to politicians - it's time to act to protect the things we love.

The Woodland Trust is attending this important event and meeting MPs with hundreds of other coalition members, from faith groups, sports clubs, parent groups and conservation and development charities.

This is your opportunity to speak to your representative and demand action, now, before it is too late.

Join us:

  • Wednesday 26 June

  • Central London: Westminster

  • Gather in St James' Park from midday for an ‘edge event’ (our own tree-related ‘fringe’ meeting) with Trust staff, members and supporters before heading to the main lobby at 12:45pm.

Speak up for trees

The Time is Now is your chance to tell your MP about the issues facing your local environment. What challenges, and success stories, can you share? Why are trees and woods important in your area?

We specifically want to ensure new environmental laws will lead to a Tree and Woodland Strategy for England. The Environment Bill (currently going through parliament) is the perfect opportunity to seed a strategy that would outline national guidelines for woodland management, plans for future planting and resources for trees and woodlands.

Getting this right will also help to embed the Tree Charter principles of ‘sustaining landscapes rich in wildlife’ and ‘combat the threats to our habitats’ and ‘strengthen our landscapes with trees’.

Please let us know you want to attend using the form.  We will send you further information.

If you are on Twitter, you can also tweet at your MP to let them know of your plans on the next page.

Travel to London

We are delighted to be able to offer a discount on all National Express coach trips to London Victoria on the day. Register to receive the code.

Depending on where you might be travelling from, you may find cheap train tickets available if you book early. There are several lift-sharing websites, or you could put a shout-out to friends, colleagues and like-minded folks about travelling together.

What's happening near you?

If you can't get to London, or prefer to stay nearer to home:

  • You may find sister events across the country - check online, or contact local community and environment groups to find out more.

  • Why not arrange a meeting with your MP at their regular surgery before or after the day.

What is the Environment Bill?

Nearly all the UK's environmental laws currently come from the EU, so it’s crucial we use this opportunity to ensure that we defend and enhance protections. We want the UK to be world leading with a secure and healthy environment that includes woods and trees. The Environment Bill will replace the existing EU standards and regulations for the environment and sets out how best to manage our countryside. Although the draft (released in December 2018) is a good start, we want to see some changes around the outline plans for governance and accountability, along with ambitious binding targets.

What is a mass lobby?

The mass lobby will cover the area surrounding Westminster (along the river banks and over Lambeth Bridge). You will need to find the other people from your constituency in the mass lobby line which will be divided into regions and constituencies and will be clearly signposted. Your MP will then come to you for an informal conversation. This will be your opportunity to chat to them about climate and the environment and why trees and woods are important to you.

What if I live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?

This is an opportunity for you too. Just like England, Scotland’s environmental laws need protecting. The Time Is Now for the Scottish Government to support a new, strong and robust Scottish Environment Act.

In Wales we’re asking for more support for agroforestry (incorporating trees and wooded spaces into farming). We need to ask the Welsh Government to support more planting, and help ensure there’s funding to help farmers sustain existing treed areas.

Northern Ireland is one of the least wooded areas of Europe. The Time Is Now to speak up for trees.
