Demand a bold Government plan for England's trees

We need landscapes rich in native woods, trees and wildlife

Government is writing a new Tree Strategy for England that will set out its approach to trees and woods for years to come. It must deliver bigger targets, better quality woodland and more connected trees in our landscapes.

Nature has been a lifeline for many of us during the pandemic. Now more than ever, we need to demand a future full of woods, trees and hedges and all the benefits they bring for people and wildlife.

England is one of the least wooded countries in Europe, with just 10% woodland cover. The England Tree Strategy is our big opportunity to change this.

The Government’s current plans fall short.

The Government is asking for people's views on what the new Tree Strategy should contain. The consultation runs until 11 September.

We must show Government that we want to see more trees throughout our landscapes and towns and cities, and we must take better care of the precious trees we already have.

Respond to the consultation.

What makes the strategy so important?

The consultation document is the outline plan that sets out how the Government intends to deliver its promises for increased tree planting, how it will fund and manage woods and trees, where the trees will go and which trees are planted. The final strategy will set the direction of travel for years to come. Those years will be critical in responding to the nature and climate crisis. We must act now.

How can I have my say?

The Government is looking for the views of the public right now. By completing the form opposite, you will be responding to DEFRA’s consultation and your views will be taken into account before the final strategy is published later this year.

Normally, we make responding quick and easy by providing a simple template to which you can add your personal details and submit. But we’ve been told that if we do that for this consultation, thousands of responses might all be counted as just one. For this reason, please take time to craft a more personal response, which includes your own experiences and views. We’ve included hints and tips for each section to help you.

What happens after the consultation has ended?

DEFRA will consider all the responses to the consultation and use them to inform the final strategy. We expect this to be published by the end of the year. If you sign up to receive updates from us we’ll let you know of any developments.
